Number 8: Courseulles-sur-Mer on Juno Beach
Juno Beach has to be top of the list of places to visit for anyone with an interest in the Canadian Army’s role on D-Day. Start at the Signal Monument in the sand at Graye-sur-Mer and a mile-or-so’s walk through the port of Courseulles-sur-Mer will take in the Royal Engineers’ bunker-buster fascine tank ‘1-Charlie’, the magnificent Cross of Lorraine monument, the Polish 1st Armoured Division monument, the bunkers of Strongpoint 31, and the excellent Juno Beach Centre. You finish the tour by the and end at the floating DD Sherman Tank on the harbour. Losses were high among the 21,000 Canadian troops who landed on Juno Beach. 359 were killed on D-Day, and B-company of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles suffered up to 78% casualties.
