Don’t skip Utah Beach on your D-Day itinerary. Brigadier General Teddy Roosevelt Jr. led his troops of the 4th Infantry Division during the assault here. Start on the beach and dunes at Exit Number 2 where Roosevelt’s men of the 8th Regiment successfully assaulted Strongpoint 5 on the morning of D-Day. Remains of the artificial Gooseberry Harbour can be seen at low tide, as can the anti-tank wall. Monuments above the dunes include those dedicated to the 4th and 90th Infantry Divisions, the US Navy, the 1st Engineers Special Brigade, the US Coastguard and the US Army – inaugurated in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan.  A replica of the LCVP ‘Higgins’ Boat landing craft sits next to the wonderful Utah Beach Landing Museum, and you can get a tasty lunch at the Café Roosevelt opposite.
